UPDATED Feb. 20 at 3:05 p.m.
Police officers from Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Cosmopolis, Washington State Patrol and the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s office, along with firefighters and EMS, responded to a fatal shooting at a residence on the 1800 block of West 2nd Street across from A.J. West Elementary School in Aberdeen Wednesday afternoon.
A caller reported hearing a female yelling that someone had been shot. The school was notified and put on lockdown.
Upon arrival, officers found a male victim inside the residence suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers carried the victim, a 36-year-old male, to a nearby ambulance, and he was transported to Harbor Regional Health Hospital where he later succumbed to head and chest wounds and died. It was relayed that the suspect, who lived with and was related to the male victim, was still armed and upstairs at the residence. A 66-year-old female victim from Renton who sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot to her posterior had already made it outside and was also taken to the hospital for treatment. It was believed the suspect was still upstairs in the home.
“When we got there we found one gentleman at the backdoor with a gunshot wound to the chest, our guys got him out, got him in the ambulance, contained the house and we were told the person who shot him was upstairs, at that point we still didn’t know what we had,” said Commander Steve Timmons, Aberdeen Police Department public information officer. “We finally cleared the house and saw (the alleged shooter) was deceased upstairs.”
With the assistance of the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office, Hoquiam Police Department, Cosmopolis Police Department, and the Washington State Patrol, officers and deputies established a perimeter around the house while attempting to make contact with the suspect. After several unsuccessful attempts to communicate, including the use of negotiators and specialized equipment to minimize further risk, officers entered the upstairs room where they found the suspect, a 66-year-old male, deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Shortly before 1:30 p.m., the Aberdeen School District sent an email indicating that A.J. West Elementary School, Harbor Learning Center, and Hopkins Preschool had been placed in lockdown. At 2:16 p.m., the District sent a follow-up email detailing dismissal instructions for students and parents.
Detectives from the Aberdeen Police Police Department and the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office processed the scene and recovered two firearms, a .357 suspected to be used in the shootings, and a rifle. A reported three to four shots were fired during an apparent murder-suicide and attempted murder that arose during a dispute over a will. The names of those involved are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The investigation is still ongoing. If you have any information call the Aberdeen Police Department at 360-533-3180.
