Back in 1994, the small Grays Harbor County town of Oakville gained international notoriety when mysterious, gelatinous blobs began raining down from the sky, confusing residents and leaving some speculating the blobs were also causing illnesses.
Now known colloquially as the Oakville blobs, the gelatinous masses quickly melted. While a few samples were collected and it was determined to be organic matter, state Department of Ecology scientists listed its source as “unknown,” and the samples were lost before more testing could be conducted.
Some theorized freak storms over the ocean had ripped jellyfish from the water and parts were falling from the air, while others believed it was frozen remnants of human waste dumped by passing planes flying overhead.
Whatever the blobs were, or their source of origin, were never discovered.
Now, one area resident believes the blobs returned in the nearby community of Rochester, less than 10 miles east of Oakville, last week.
“We noticed clear blobs falling from the sky and landing in our yard,” Alli McCrite said.
The blobs fell around 4 p.m. during a rain storm on Tuesday, April 8.
While McCrite submitted a post to the Rochester, What a Great Place to Live Facebook group asking if anyone else saw the blobs that never got approved, she learned others in the area saw the blobs too.
“My neighbors did also have them after all! They’ve melted now unfortunately, though,” she added.
McCrite did take a sample as well, and though it also has melted, she has still retained the liquid.
