A 27-year-old Ocean Shores man suspected to be high on heroin struck several cars on Simpson Avenue Wednesday morning, according to Hoquiam Police chief Jeff Myers.
A citizen behind the late-model red Camaro told dispatch the car was weaving and crossing into the oncoming lane eastbound on Emerson Avenue just before 11 a.m. After striking two parked cars in the 700 block of Simpson Avenue, the driver reportedly exited the car and was seen stuffing items from the Camaro’s trunk into a backpack, according to Myers.
“Officers arrived at the scene and conducted field sobriety tests as the driver appeared to be impaired, although there was no sign of intoxicating liquor,” said Myers. “The driver was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and transported to the Hoquiam City Jail.”
A certified drug recognition expert from the State Patrol responded to the jail to conduct an evaluation. Hoquiam officers got a warrant for a blood test, “based on probably cause the driver was under the influence of heroin,” said Myers. A warrant was also secured for the Camaro, where officers found drug paraphernalia and a syringe suspected to contain heroin, said Myers.
