On Monday, U.S. Rep. Emily Randall — 6th District, joined her Democratic colleagues on the House Oversight Committee in calling for President Trump to immediately rescind the “deferred resignation offer” extended to federal employees in an effort to purge the federal government of its workforce.
The members expressed concern that this is “an illegal scam, (that) will decimate our civil service and cause immeasurable harm to the American public.”
On Jan. 28, federal employees received an email from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) with the subject “Fork in the Road.” The email outlined a “deferred resignation” offer for federal employees with a deadline for response of Feb. 6.
Congresswoman Randall released the following statement in response:
“Another week of the Trump administration, another week of pure chaos. We are in dangerous territory. President Trump and un-elected Elon Musk are politicizing the federal workforce in a direct threat to our democracy. The actions taken by OPM to purge the federal workforce of experts, watchdogs, and career civil servants isn’t making government run more efficiently — it’s running it into the ground.
“The American people rely on these programs — the chaos and confusion created by these actions are helping no one. This bogus sham-offer must be immediately rescinded.”
There are currently 20 different lawsuits challenging at least 11 executive orders related to ending birthright citizenship, the firing of Inspectors General, terminations of federal civil service employees, and the purge of the FBI and the suspension of funds appropriated by Congress.
House Oversight Democrats, along with other committees of jurisdiction, vow to continue to use every tool in the toolbox to hold the Trump administration accountable.
