Ocosta shooter found guilty of second-degree assault

On Friday, Feb. 14, a Grays Harbor jury found 54-year-old Jesse Cubbison of Aberdeen guilty of two counts of second-degree assault and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm stemming from a Nov. 11 shooting on state Route 105 in Ocosta.

His sentencing is set for March 4 in Grays Harbor Superior Court. The trial lasted five days and the jury deliberated for just over an hour before reaching their guilty verdict.

“A special thank you goes out to the Grays Harbor County Prosecutor’s Office for their diligent work on this case,” said Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Kevin Schrader. “Two other suspects charged in this case are still awaiting their day in court.”

On Nov. 11, at about 11 p.m., Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a shooting at a residence at 1060 state Route 105 in Ocosta. The reporting party advised that he was shot at while leaving the residence and the vehicle he was in suffered damage from multiple gunshots.

Several deputies from the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Aberdeen Police Department responded to assist. After obtaining an initial statement from the reporting party and a witness on scene, it was determined that there were several subjects inside the suspect residence possibly armed with firearms.

The Aberdeen Regional Special Response Team was called to the scene to assist in making contact at the residence. With the use of their armored vehicle as cover, members of the Special Response Team were able to safely approach the residence, make contact with the occupants inside and safely detain them.

Statements were obtained from several witnesses, and a search warrant was obtained allowing deputies to process the scene. Evidence was collected from the scene to include several firearms.

Deputies were able to establish probable cause to arrest multiple subjects for various crimes.
