A 37-year-old Olympia man died in a single-car crash in the parking lot of Robert Gray Elementary School at about 8:45 p.m. Monday, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.
Witnesses and physical evidence at the scene indicated the man was driving his 1993 Ford Taurus east down the steep hill on Third Avenue at a high rate of speed. He didn’t stop at the B Street stop sign, continued across B Street and entered the Robert Gray parking lot, the release said. The car then crashed into the boulders that separate the raised entry off B Street from the lower part of the parking lot and went airborne landing in the middle of the lot, according to a news release.
The driver was separated from the car through the driver’s door, according to the release. There were no other passengers in the car. There was no evidence at the scene that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, the release said. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
