One dead in highway crash near McCleary

Another serious crash happened the next day on the road to Westport

A 70-year-old man died after being involved in a motor vehicle crash near McCleary on Friday.

Michael Fagerquist, 70, Port Angeles, was attempting to cross state Route 8 in a Honda SUV and turn left to head east just before noon, according to a Washington State Patrol incident report.

A Ford motorhome, driven by a 66-year-old Yelm man, attempted to dodge Fagerquist but struck his vehicle, with both vehicles coming to rest in the median.

A 67-year-old Yelm woman who was a passenger in the motorhome called 911, according to the report; Fagerquist was transported to Summit Pacific Medical Center and pronounced dead there. Both the driver and passenger were also transported for injuries.

The highway was shut down for a time while WSP troopers investigated the crash.

The Grays Harbor County Coroner’s Office is still looking to contact Fagerquist’s next of kin, as of Monday morning.

Head-on collision

Another serious crash occurred the next day south of Aberdeen, on state Route 105, at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

A 63-year-old Aberdeen man heading toward Aberdeen in a Chevrolet sedan attempted to turn left when a second car traveling in the other direction, a Ford sports car driven by a 77-year-old Grayland man, struck him head-on, according to the report.

The Grayland man was transported to Aberdeen for further care, while the 63-year-old was airlifted to St. Joseph Medical Center, according to the report.

Both vehicles were totaled in the crash. Drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash, according to the report.
