One dead in Moclips shooting; police seeking suspect

Rufus A. Phelps is considered armed and dangerous; the public should not approach him.

Police are seeking a man after a shooting in Moclips on Monday afternoon left one man dead.

Rufus A. Phelps, 63, is sought in connection to the shooting, which resulted in the death of a 59-year-old man from multiple gunshot wounds, according to a news release from the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office. Phelps is considered armed and dangerous according to the news release, and members of the public are asked to call 911 if they have any information on his whereabouts. Members of the public should not approach Phelps.

The sheriff’s office was first alerted at 1:40 p.m. on Monday to the report of a shooting off of the 100 block of Otis Road in Moclips. Deputies arrived on scene and located a 59-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. A deputy, a Quinault Police Department officer and personnel from Grays Harbor Fire District 8 performed life saving efforts on the victim but the man died shortly after being transported from the scene, according to the news release.

Phelps fled the scene shortly after the shooting, according to the news release. Law enforcement personnel searched the scene for Phelps until early Tuesday morning. Investigators believe the argument began over a property dispute.
