One killed in vehicle-pedestrian crash

The investigation shut down a major downtown street

A man was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Heron Street in downtown Aberdeen early Tuesday morning.

Police are investigating the circumstances around the crash which resulted in the death of a 55-year-old man, said Cmdr. Steve Timmons of the Aberdeen Police Department.

“It was a vehicle versus pedestrian collision. We got the call at 7:14 this morning,” Timmons said. “The subject was deceased on our arrival.”

The pedestrian was crossing the street away from a crosswalk, Timmons said, when he was hit by a car driven by a 52-year-old Aberdeen woman, who immediately stopped and called 911. There does not appear to be any criminal element to the case, Timmons said, and there was no sign of impairment.

Police and fire, assisted by agencies from neighboring cities, responded to the crash, Timmons said. Heron Street was closed down, causing significant traffic backup. Timmons thanked the Hoquiam and Cosmopolis police, as well as the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office and Washington State Patrol for assisting in the investigation and covering calls as Aberdeen responded to the crash.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience,” Timmons said. “I know it got kind of hectic, that time of the morning.”

The gloom of winter can make it difficult to see pedestrians, Timmons said. While there’s no indication the driver involved in the crash was driving improperly, it’s never a bad idea to drive carefully.

“With the weather the way it is, slow down,” Timmons said. “Give yourself some extra time to get where you’re going. Watch for pedestrians.”

The dead man’s name is being withheld as the coroner’s office contacts the next of kin.
