Outdoor School offers hands-on teaching lessons

The math and science lessons were outside and hands-on for Aberdeen sixth graders during Outdoor School at the YMCA’s Camp Bishop on Lost Lake on Oct. 4-7.

The camp took place under the direction of high school teachers Kacey Karnath and Robert Sutlovich, aka Frizzle and Quake. The students were teamed up by cabins and their counselors were Aberdeen High School students.

“I was absolutely amazed with how awesome our Outdoor School is at Camp Bishop,” said Aberdeen Superintendent Jeffrey Thake, who was able to visit the camp on Thursday. “I was able to experience songs, breakfast, watch our high school students assuming leadership positions and see the passion our staff members bring to the program. It’s an extremely positive experience for all and I am so glad we have this opportunity for our students.”

Groups of students were taking turns at various stations, including:

• Collecting water samples and conducting various water quality tests,

• Using simple tools and a tape measure to calculate the height of trees,

• Using hand tools to dig different channels and depressions on the shore to study and predict how the water would flow in,

• Learning how to use a two-man crosscut saw and studying why the shape of the teeth contributes to the saw’s performance,

• Studying the resulting slice of wood to learn about the growth of the tree,

• Snipping and studying elderberry limbs to study the texture of the center (the pith) in various stages of growth, and

• Designing a mini terraced landscape on a hillside with the goal of erosion control.

All of the above was just the first morning. Then it was time for lunch, cabin assignments and cabin setup.
