Freeride jet skiers are descending on Grayland’s beach this week to defy the laws of physics and thrill spectators with backflips, barrel rolls and more.
The ninth annual Grayland Open Pro/Am Freeride Jet Ski Competition kicks off today with a freeride clinic. Spectators are welcome to find a spot at the end of Grayland Beach Road and watch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as freeriders test out their best moves for the competition to follow. This is also a chance for riders of all skill levels to learn from some of the best in the world.
The surf and aerials competition runs for three days starting Friday at 10:30 a.m., when the amateur competitors take center stage. Other than a midday break, there will be heats through about 6 p.m.
The main competition kicks off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, again lasting into the early evening. On Sunday, the finals for all classes begin at 10 a.m. When that is over, the top eight drivers will take to the water for a solid 15 minutes of action in the annual Pro Jam.
Awards will be handed out around 3 p.m. Special recognition will be given for the gnarliest wipeout, best broken ski, sickest trick and judges’ favorite in the Pro Jam.
After each day’s activities wind down, spectators and competitors often gather at the Cranberry Winery and Bog Water Brewery for live music and dinner. The venue is at 2858 S. Forrest St. in Westport.
The competition is free for spectators. There will be food for purchase as well as custom T-shirts and posters at the races. Spectators can also purchase raffle tickets for prizes, and there will be music playing throughout the day.
Riders will compete in two classes:
• Standup, including Masters (age 40 and older), Rookie (beginner surf only class), Amateur surf and air, and Pro “for the big ballers”
• Runabout, including Sport Class/Sit-down, x2, Waveblaster and Spark.
