Remains found at scene of Chenois Valley Road fire

North of Hoquiam

Human remains have been found at the scene of a deadly domestic violence incident that ended with gunshots and a fire that destroyed a home on Chenois Valley Road north of Hoquiam Aug. 31.

“Human remains have been recovered,” read a statement Monday from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, which is handling the investigation because Grays Harbor law enforcement personnel discharged their weapons during the incident. “Cause of death and identification will be up to the Grays Harbor County Coroner’s office.”

A husband and wife were presumed dead after the domestic violence call escalated into explosions, a fire and gunshots at the residence, after hours of negotiations with the suspect by the county regional crisis response unit.

Since then, “Officers, detectives, evidence technicians, FBI, ATF, the local fire department, the Grays Harbor County Road Department, and numerous SAR volunteers have been thoroughly searching the scene for evidence inside of the burned down residence,” read Monday’s statement. “Over the next weeks we will be processing and evaluating the evidence. Detectives will be interviewing any remaining officers and witnesses to the incident.”

No further information was available Monday.
