Rollover accident in Aberdeen causes power outages

A 21-year-old Aberdeen man crashed his car into a power line pole and was sent to the hospital Wednesday night, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.

At about 9:10 p.m., the man crashed a 2012 Ford Focus into the pole, and sheared off the pole just above the ground, before the car rolled onto its roof in the 1800 block of Bel Aire Avenue, according to the police report. Power lines were brought down, resulting in outages.

After the collision, witnesses said they observed the driver fleeing the scene on foot toward the Westerly Drive and Sherwood Lane area. Aberdeen Police officers responded to the scene, backed by Hoquiam Police officers and a Grays Harbor County deputy sheriff K-9 team. The suspect fled into a wooded area known as the Sherwood Forest, where the K-9 team located the suspect down a steep embankment and took him into custody.

A search warrant was secured for blood evidence, as officers suspected the driver to be impaired by intoxicants. The suspect has remained in the hospital receiving medical treatment. Charges of DUI, hit and run, obstructing a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest are pending for the suspect upon his release from the hospital. The vehicle was a total loss, and PUD linesmen responded to repair damaged power infrastructure in the area.
