Rumors of a 14-year- old student with a weapon prompted Hoquiam High School administrators to lock down the school’s campus at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
According to Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers, the school was placed in lockdown, police were notified and the principal and vice principal searched for the student who allegedly made the threat. The lockdown procedure was “per school district procedures,” said Myers.
The student allegedly damaged a door at the front entrance of the school as he exited the building before police arrived. The right front door of the main building was crossed with caution tape and a window was broken.
Officers detained the student and no weapon was found. “He was subsequently arrested for malicious mischief for the damage to the door and transported to the Hoquiam Police Department,” said Myers. “He will be booked at the Grays Harbor Juvenile Detention Center.”
The lockdown was quickly lifted and students went about their day. Many could be seen in the lunch area, others milling around in front of the school and some heading off-campus shortly after the school was cleared.
“The lockdown and response were exactly as expected and the school did a good job in immediately responding, as all such information is taken seriously,” said Myers. School officials deferred all media inquiries to Myers and will be sending a letter home with parents explaining the incident.
