The Salvation Army may have closed its store in downtown Aberdeen, but it still plans to offer the range of social services it has in the past.
Those are services such as the food bank and food boxes, hygiene kits, social services and rent and utility assistance.
“It’s important to let people know we’re offering the same services we’ve been offering for, I assume, a very long time,” said Lt. Lincoln Hawk, who operates the Aberdeen branch of the Salvation Army with his wife, Lt. Claire O’Brien-Hawk.
Even if the Salvation Army doesn’t offer a specific health or social service someone needs, Claire said they can work with community partners to connect them to the right place.
“The basic idea is Salvation Army is going to help people however is needed,” she said.
According to her, the store closed because it wasn’t making a profit, and in turn wasn’t helping fund the Salvation Army’s local community services as intended. The offices and food bank next to the store at 118 W. Wishkah St. will still operate as normal.
In addition, the organization recently brought in Jen Chuks-Nwokike to serve as the new family services coordinator. She said some of her goals are to brighten up their offices and help locals for the Salvation Army
