The Sam Benn Park tennis courts have reopened after a recent resurfacing project, which cost $20,000 and was paid for by local donors.
Patrick and Kathy Quigg and Steven Isaacson offered to pay for the resurfacing project, Aberdeen Parks Director Stacie Barnum wrote in a press release. Jason Woodman, from WCF Courts & Fitness was hired by the Quiggs and Isaacson to do the necessary repairs. The tennis courts, built in the 1920s, were in need of court surface repair, as the resurfacing done in 2014 was failing.
The new courts are filled in with blue, with the outside areas colored in green.
Sam Benn Park also recently underwent a $400,000 renovation to improve parking and access to the courts for people with disabilities.
These courts are used by local residents, tourists and the Aberdeen High School tennis teams. Barnum said she hopes to see the courts properly used going forward to avoid damage to them.
“Much of the previous damage to the court surface was due to people using the courts for bikes, tricycles and an area for their dogs,” Barnum wrote. “These types of activities are prohibited in the tennis courts because of the damage they can do to the surface.”
Barnum wrote that the city appreciates the local families for paying for the court renovations.
“Without donors like the Quiggs and Mr. Isaacson, projects like this would not be possible,” Barnum said. “We hope the community enjoys these beautiful tennis courts for many years to come.”
