The Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office is searching for suspects following an attempted burglary from the Satsop post office early Sunday morning.
Sheriffs deputies were alerted around 3:40 a.m. of a vehicle towing a safe westbound on the Monte-Elma Road, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
Deputies responded, finding the safe abandoned on the road, said Undersheriff Kevin Schrader, though the suspect vehicle had fled. The post office itself had been breached through the front door, and a number of items were disturbed, Schrader said in the news release. The safe itself was a 3-foot-by-3-foot-by-3-foot cube weighing several hundred pounds, Schrader said.
“When you commit a commercial burglary of this nature we’re going to fully investigate it and attempt to find the persons responsible,” Schrader said. “Ultimately it could be considered a federal crime.”
Law enforcement personnel investigating the crime are asking residents of the area with home surveillance cameras to check them between 3:30 and 4 a.m. on Sept. 17; the sheriff’s office believes the suspect vehicle may have briefly gone in someone’s driveway, Schrader said.
“We’re hoping anyone saw any kind of suspicious vehicle,” Schrader said.
The post office is currently closed; Schrader said he’s unsure when it reopens.
Anyone with information is asked to contact county dispatch at 360-533-8765; the case number is 23-21359, according to the news release.
