A fire in the 1800 block of MacFarlane Street in south Aberdeen early Saturday morning caused an estimated $220,000 in damage to the home and its contents, according to Aberdeen Fire Department Battalion Chief Damon Lillybridge.
Three occupants of the home were able to escape from the fire and no injuries were reported.
The call came in at 12:45 a.m. and initial units found fire and smoke coming from the roof peak of the two-story wood frame structure. From there the fire spread throughout the attic and void spaces located adjacent to the second floor bedrooms and above the first floor main entrance on the south side of the structure.
“The fire caused extensive heat damage to both the first and second floors as well as the roof. There was smoke damage throughout the rest of the building,” said Lillybridge. “Ultimately, fire crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire, preventing further extension into the northern half of the first and second floors as well as any surrounding exposures.”
Fire crews were on scene for approximately four hours, said Lillybridge. A total of 19 Aberdeen firefighters, the Assistant Chief, Chief, and two Hoquiam firefighters responded with one Command Unit, three engines, and four medic units.
“The cause of the fire appears to be the result of excessive heat from a chimney fire extending through the brick and mortar onto adjacent framing attached to the exterior roof and wall,” said Lillybridge. “The Aberdeen Fire Department had responded to a chimney fire at this address earlier in the evening. Crews were able to extinguish the chimney fire utilizing a water line down the chimney.”
