Daniel Stephen Heyting made his first court appearance Friday after his arrest Thursday on charges of first-degree murder for the death of 35-year-old Andrew Detwiler of Hoquiam.
Heyting, 30, also of Hoquiam, was ordered held on $500,000 bail. He was appointed counsel and a second court appearance has been scheduled for next month.
According to court paperwork, a witness discovered Detwiler’s body at the boat launch on the Humptulips River located at 1344 State Route 109 about 10 miles outside of Hoquiam Aug. 12. A connection was made between the victim and Heyting through phone messages and a separate investigation. Eventually a witness placed the two together at the boat launch the night in question, according to the Prosecutor’s Office. Evidence collected from Heyting tied him to the scene, according to court documents.
There will be a memorial service for Detwiler in Hoquiam Aug. 25. His sister, Caitlin Ashleigh Rae, has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help the family with funeral costs, gofundme.com/andrew-detwilers-funeral-fund.
“He was such an amazing person,” said Detwiler’s sister, Caitlin Ashleigh Rae, “with an amazing heart and soul.”
