Teenagers arrested in Hoquiam theft and vandalism spree

Two kids were arrested for breaking glass and robbing stores

A pair of teenagers was arrested, one repeatedly, following a string of vandalism incidents and a burglary that occurred in Hoquiam last week.

The incidents were committed by a small group of teenagers from Aberdeen and Hoquiam, said Lt. Jeff Salstrom of the Hoquiam Police Department.

“We had a group of what we believe is four juveniles going around town, breaking windows,” Salstrom said. “They committed a burglary at the farmer’s market.”

The kids were throwing rocks and bottles at a variety of windows, Salstrom said, and stole a small amount of money beginning early on Sept. 4, when the first calls came in. Officers arrested a 13-year-old boy and transported him to the county’s juvenile corrections facility, Salstrom said.

As officers continued to investigate the case, Salstrom said, officers responding to a call on the evening of the 4th about a theft, arrested the same 13-year-old again, this time in the company of a 14-year-old who had been identified as a suspect in the burglaries from Grays Harbor Farmers Market in Hoquiam.

There are two additional suspects being investigated for the malicious mischief and burglary charges, Salstrom said. Approximate cost of the damage and the thefts is estimated to not be more than $5,000, Salstrom said. The investigation is ongoing.

Salstrom said that Hoquiam still has a parental responsibility ordinance that hasn’t been used very often of late but is still part of the city’s laws.

“Parents can be held responsible for the actions of their children,” Salstrom said. “We have a juvenile curfew in Hoquiam.”

The city’s curfew extends from midnight to 5 a.m., Salstrom said.
