The suspect in a hit-and-run at the Bank of the Pacific at 300 E. Market St. in Aberdeen remains in critical care this morning after an officer-involved shooting shortly before noon Thursday.
“He is expected to undergo another surgery later today,” said Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Brad Johansson.
He said the Aberdeen Police officer involved, who has not yet been identified, was not injured.
The suspect has been identified as a 51-year-old male from Redmond, Oregon. He is not known to local law enforcement, according to Johansson. The vehicle he was driving hit another vehicle and fled the scene. The victims of the hit and run were not injured.
“The suspect appears to be the driver of the hit-and-run vehicle,” said Johansson. “The suspect vehicle was impounded and a search warrant will be served on the vehicle.”
Johansson said Thursday that the call came in at 11:51 a.m. The first officer responding made contact with the suspect in the 500 block of East First Street.
A witness told investigators “the suspect went toward the officer. The citizen heard the officer yelling at the suspect to drop the knife but was unable to see the suspect’s hands or a knife,” said Johansson. “The suspect continued to approach the officer when he was shot.”
Two other officers arrived on scene during the incident, he said. Those two officers described the suspect approaching the officer and ignoring his commands prior to the officer firing his weapon. One officer was able to describe a knife in the suspect’s hand as he approached the officer, and a knife was recovered near the suspect.
The suspect was transported to the hospital. In a statement released shortly before 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Johansson said the man was in “critical condition undergoing surgery for his injuries.”
This is the second officer-involved shooting in Aberdeen in less than two months. Kristopher D. Fitzpatrick, 41, of Aberdeen, was shot and killed by an Aberdeen officer Sept. 9 after Fitzpatrick reportedly refused to drop a small handgun he was carrying as officers approached to serve a felony warrant.
As with the Sept. 9 shooting, Aberdeen Police requested assistance from the Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team to investigate Thursday’s shooting. The team is composed of detectives from Mason, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Lewis and Pacific counties.
Members of the investigative team were on scene by 2 p.m. Thursday. Johansson said the investigation will continue as detectives contact witnesses, obtain video evidence from nearby businesses and further process the scene.
The Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team recently turned in the results of its investigation into the Sept. 9 shooting to Grays Harbor County Prosecutor Katie Svoboda. The Prosecutor’s Office will review the reports and provide its own conclusion in the coming weeks as to whether that shooting was justified.
