A tsunami preparedness presentation is coming to Aberdeen on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
The meeting at the Aberdeen High School auditorium will be an open forum where the public can meet with state and local emergency managers to learn about the ways to prepare for a tsunami event.
The Aberdeen, Hoquiam and Cosmopolis areas are at high risk for tsunami events and access to high ground is limited, making preparedness a must, according to regional emergency managers.
All attendees will have a chance to win one of three NOAA all-hazard radio alert weather radios, an important supplement to the existing tsunami-warning towers in the area.
Speakers schooled in the arena of tsunami preparedness include:
• Maximillian Dixon, earthquake program manager for the State Emergency Management Division.
• Daniel Eungard with the Washington Geological Survey.
• Cale Ash, principal engineer with Degenkolb Engineers, designers of the Tokeland vertical tsunami evacuation tower.
• Tim Cook, state mitigation officer with the state Emergency Management Division.
• Bob Freitag from University of Washington Institute for Hazard Mitigation Planning and Research.
• Chuck Wallace, deputy director of Grays Harbor Emergency Management.
The event is sponsored by the Aberdeen School District, Washington State Emergency Management, Grays Harbor Management and the University of Washington Institute for Hazard Mitigation Planning and Research. The Aberdeen High School auditorium is located at 410 N. G St.
