The bodies of two men were found near the Westport Jetty on Sunday afternoon, after their boat was believed to have capsized earlier that morning. The two have been identified as Sean Dooney, 56, of Portland, and his uncle, Kevin Dooney, 74, of Camas.

The two are believed to have been on a fishing trip earlier Sunday morning, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Kevin Cornell, who responded to the incident. He said the current suspicion is that the boat got too close to the jetty’s northern side, causing it to capsize.

“What we suspect is that at 10 a.m. there was some wind chop, and all we can figure is they got too close to the jetty,” he said.

Both men were wearing life jackets when they were found.

One body was found on the shore, closer to the start of the jetty’s north side, while the other was later found floating about two miles out from the tip of the jetty in the ocean. Cornell said CPR was performed to no avail. When the incident was reported at around 12:30 p.m., the overturned 12-foot aluminum boat was found about 10-feet up on the rocks.

A helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria was dispatched along with a boat crew from Westport to recover the bodies. The Westport Police Department and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife assisted with the search effort.

He also said it was surprising the Coast Guard was not informed of the boat or the bodies until the afternoon, considering there were other fishers on the jetty and boat traffic nearby.

“It was surprising with all the traffic out there that no one saw him,” Cornell said. “There were six people fishing on the jetty, and roughly about 25 boats out. We didn’t get a report of the boat until 12:30, and then 20 minutes later about the body.”

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office and the Coast Guard are still conducting investigations into the incident. Sheriff’s Office Deputy Steve Shumate said “it’s hard to say if they died by exposure, drowning or a combination.”
