Aberdeen police arrested a woman in connection with a fire that was started on the porch of the Driftwood Theater over the weekend. Commander Dale Green said in a news release that just before 10 a.m. Saturday, officers were called to the theater for a report of a subject banging on the outside walls of the building at East 3rd Street. Several Driftwood Playhouse volunteers were inside the building at the time of call. Officers could see smoke coming from one of the support beams. When officers arrived, they found a 63-year-old Aberdeen transient who was holding lighters and a slightly burned piece of cloth.
Green said the Aberdeen Fire Department was called to the scene twice, first for the porch fire that was quickly extinguished. The second time, a fire was reported 10 feet away at another doorway near the rear of the building. The fire department returned to find a minor extension of fire into the flooring. Crews overhauled the floor and wall of the doorway to stop the spread of the fire.
The suspect was arrested for arson in the first degree, possession of drug paraphernalia, and criminal trespass 2nd degree on Saturday. She was transferred to the Grays Harbor County Jail Sunday where she remains held without bail on investigation of the arson charge.
