Kat Bryant, Daily World Lifestyle Editor and editor of Washington Coast Magazine, was presented the first-place Grand Award for best feature article in the nationwide 2020 Veterans of Foreign Wars Publications contest at the Aberdeen VFW post Wednesday.
Bryant’s September, 2019 Daily World story “History Class in a Box?” featured Becky Carossino’s project to build suitcases containing military artifacts for use in local schools to teach students about local veterans. Carossino is a member of the Friends of the Aberdeen Museum.
“I want to thank Becky Carossino and the Friends of the Aberdeen Museum for allowing me to tell this story on their behalf,” said Bryant. “It’s a terrific project, and I’m proud to have had a role in it.”
Bryant’s award was in the best feature article category, which had 12 entries. There were 39 entries in the nationwide contest, submitted for consideration by 24 VFW posts and districts and six VFW departments. Two non-VFW-affiliated journalism professionals sifted through the awards to select the winners.
Former Aberdeen VFW post commander Jim Daly, who himself has placed in the contest for articles printed in The Daily World in 2015 and 2016, submitted Bryant’s article to the competition. Current post commander Anthony Magri presented the award at the post’s Veterans Day celebration.
