WSU Master Gardeners’ 1st Saturday Workshop: Small-Space Gardening

“Small Space” workshop April 1

No April Fool’s, it’s free! The WSU Master Gardeners of Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties will continue their free “1st Saturday” workshops on April 1 from 10 a.m. to noon for gardening skills improvement.

This second workshop is “Small Space Gardening,” designed to show some basic plants to use (limited only by lack of imagination) and how to place them in your choice of containers.

This workshop will be held at the WSU Extension office at the Elma fairgrounds.

“Rather than spending time in the produce aisle at the market, it’s so much more fun to watch produce growing in your own containers, possibly by nontraditional methods,” says Kim Woodford, a member of WSU Master Gardeners. “Have you tried using a straw bale to grow kale or lettuces? How high can you go? WSU Master Gardeners will show you how to explore vertical gardening. What about color? We’ll look at colors that attract birds and bees. Our Mason bees were so popular in our March 4 workshop that they will be returning with a sequel.”

WSU-certified master gardeners who present the workshop will allow time for questions from the participants. They also will discuss which plants and plant families are best suited for container-related production. A pot of colorful plants will go home with the winner of a drawing.

No preregistration is required. Contact for the class is Cindy Burton, email: cindyburton@comcast.net.

Upcoming workshops include “Attracting Wildlife into Your Garden” on May 6 and “Tips for Practical Gardening” June 3.
