Barbara Joan Hasbrouck-Jones left this physical world to join the angels on Monday, March 6, 2017, after a short illness. She entered this world on Oct. 8, 1937, in Chicago, Ill. She was born to Edward and Marcille Mehlenbacher. She went to school in Lake Quinault, Wash., while living with her great-aunt and uncle, Emil and Opal Erickson and sister Dorothy (Gentemann) Mehlenbacher. Barbara Mehlenbacher graduated from Richland High School in Eastern Washington in 1955.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene (Frank) Jones, a daughter, Margo McCormick, of Kirkland, Wash., and a granddaughter, Amber Elwell of Avondale, Ariz. She is also survived by step-daughter FraNa (Bill) Ready, step-grandson Matthew (Kelly) Ready and step-great-granddaughter Maya Ready. Barbara was preceded in death by husband John R. Hasbrouck, of Elma, Wash.
The birds of Montesano knew her as the “Bird Lady” – especially the hummingbirds. One of the unique accomplishments of her life was swimming the length of Lake Quinault (over 3.8 miles) at 16 years old. Barbara was well-known in Montesano as the local liquor store owner for 31 years in 3 different locations prior to her retirement.
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly; in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you; but you did not go alone…
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Montesano Church of God, 317 E Spruce Ave, Montesano, with a reception to follow.
