Betty Violet Bauman, age 84, died peacefully on Nov. 29, 2017, at home in Ocean Shores, Wash. Betty was born April 23, 1933, in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of George M. Zimpfer and Violet K. Zimpfer.
Betty grew up in Buffalo and Williamsville, N.Y. where she learned to play the clarinet and played in the marching band at Williamsville High School. After a summer at camp she headed to Chicago where she attended Nursing School at Wheaton College.
In 1954, Betty met and married the love of her life, Edward J. Bauman. He was in ROTC and about to graduate when they married and they were soon off to a 25 year adventure in the Air Force. Their Air Force journey took them from the University of Minnesota to Seattle, Wash.; to Alamogordo, N.M.; to Boston, Mass.; to Dayton, Ohio; to Canoga Park, Calif.; to Colorado Springs, Colo. and the Air Force Academy where he retired from the Air Force in 1980. After a few more years in Colorado they were off to Bellevue, Wash. where Ed taught at Seattle Pacific University. Eventually, in 2004, they made their final move to their home on the bay in Ocean Shores, Wash. where they have lived happily for the past 13 years.
Family was the delight of Betty’s life! Her husband, her children and her ever-growing family brought her tremendous joy. She loved to cook and host people in her home and supported the ministries that she and her husband, Ed, were involved in together. Her love for Jesus shone through her life. She had a passion for young people, serving in Child Evangelism Fellowship when her children were young and along with her husband, they served in High School & College Ministries throughout their lives. She loved singing in the church choir and was honored by being chosen to sing with her favorite Christian musicians – Bill & Gloria Gaither and at Billy Graham crusades.
Betty was an active member of Faith Community Church in Ocean Shores where she worked with Vacation Bible School. Along with her husband, she was an active supporter of Grays Harbor Young Life.
Betty is survived by her husband, Edward Bauman; her four children, Judi (Todd) Johnson of Lincoln, California; Jan (Gordon) Purcey of Dallas, Texas; Jim (Andrea) Bauman of Lake Tapps, Wash.; and Joy (Garrett) Bender of Yakima, Wash. Betty is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, 1:30 p.m. at Faith Community Church, Ocean Shores, Wash. There will be a family burial the following week at Tahoma National Cemetery.
