Bill Workman, 70, of Hazlet, New Jersey passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022.
He was born in West Virginia on Feb. 11, 1952, to John E. Workman Sr. and Minnie B. (Roland) Workman. After a brief time spent in Darlington, Maryland beginning in the summer of 1957, the Workman family moved to Aberdeen, Washington in the summer of 1958. There, Bill attended Robert Gray School, Miller Junior High School, and Weatherwax High School from which he graduated in 1971.
In 1973, he received his degree from Grays Harbor College. During his time at the college, he found enjoyment from appearing in plays, everything from light comedies to Shakespearean works. He was proud of the award that he was given as “Actor of the Year” at the college. Years later, his image would appear in several “National Lampoon”-produced magazines and books, and he had a non-speaking close-up role in the Jon Cryer comedy/drama film “Went to Coney Island on a Mission From God … Be Back By Five.”
He worked for several years in the 1970s at Aberdeen’s Eaton’s Bookstall before moving to Staten Island, New York and joining his older brother John at “Heavy Metal” magazine in Manhattan where Bill served as Assistant Art Director for that publication. “Heavy Metal” was a part of 21st Century Communications, producer of “National Lampoon” magazine, as well as the “Lampoon Radio Hour,” the “National Lampoon’s Lemmings” off-Broadway play, various “Lampoon” comedy record albums, and such films as “National Lampoon’s Animal House.”
He later worked for Dean Witter and for Western Publishing before retiring to New Jersey.
Bill also enjoyed sports and had a huge collection of sports-related books and memorabilia. He had a great love for animals and counted a number of cats as pets over the decades.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Matawan, New Jersey and had recently transferred to the First Baptist Church of Keyport, New Jersey.
Bill is survived by his older brother John E. Workman Jr. (Cathy) and niece Kate Workman, all of Hazlet, New Jersey.
He was preceded in death by his parents John E. Workman Sr. in 1968 and Minnie B. (Roland) Workman in 2005.
Arrangements are being made by Bedle Funeral Home, Matawan, New Jersey.
