Cindy (Moyer) Basich (68) was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 9, 2023 after a courageous battle with multiple health challenges.
Cindy was born in Aberdeen, WA on December 11, 1954 to Jim and Janice Moyer. She graduated from Hoquiam HS in 1973 and shortly afterwards was crowned Miss Grays Harbor. In the summer of 1974, she competed in the Miss Washington Pageant in Vancouver and once again displayed her beautiful voice. On August 17, 1974, she married John Basich at St. Mary’s Church in Aberdeen. The newlyweds moved to Battle Ground, where John was teaching, and made Clark County their home for the next 49 years.
After attending Clark College, Cindy graduated from Portland State University in 1977 with a B.A. in Education. She taught two years at Fruit Valley Elementary School before John and her welcomed their precious gift, Mylei Makiko-Kim, from S. Korea in 1979. Cindy’s life centered on being a full-time mom after the arrival of precious gift #2, Gabriel John, in 1983. When the kids were older, she returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher, primarily at Fisher’s Landing Elementary School.
John describes his Cin as the “Cal Ripken” of their family. The “Hall of Famer” was there day after day, helping at school, adding her special touches to holiday celebrations, buying just the right gifts for loved ones, making countless lunches, providing taxi service for the kids’ activities, setting out John’s school clothes, and giving wise advice to family and friends. She did all of this in a consistently selfless manner.
Cindy treasured time with family and friends and loved to laugh, especially at herself. She brought joy to all things: camping as a youngster, spending time at the beach or Sunriver, working her magic in the kitchen, playing card & board games, and meeting monthly with her Bunco Babes, were among her favorites. And, the joy that surpassed all joy was the time spoiling her two beautiful grandkids, Sabine (11) and Sajan (8). Observing their passion for reading and imaginative play, listening intently about their school day and various activities, loving the sound of their spontaneous laughter, cherishing their art projects, and watching them grow in their love for the Lord, “Umma” was their biggest fan. She never tired of receiving their heartfelt hugs. As Cindy’s health issues became more serious, Sabine and Sajan’s visits were always medicine of the very best kind.
Cindy is survived by her husband John, daughter, Mylei Carlson (Steven); son, Gabriel; stepmother, June Moyer; mother-in-law, Anita Basich; granddaughter, Sabine Carlson; grandson, Sajan Carlson; sisters, Kelly Moyer Olson (Arnie), Jamie (Kiko) Carstensen (Brad), Sandy Laird (Dale); brothers, Paul Pendergraft, Bryan Clark (Debbie), Ricky Clark (Janese); and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her father, James Moyer, and mother, Janice Luce.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00, April 22nd at Columbia Presbyterian Church in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to Open House Ministries. Please share a memory @ www.columbian.com/obit
