Don Holcomb passed away Sept. 16, 2023, in Olympia, Washington at the age of 78.
Don was born Jan. 9, 1945, in Granger, Washington to Dewey and Ardella Holcomb. He and the family moved to Aloha, Washington when his dad returned from WWII. A couple of years later they moved into the family home on Ocean Beach Road in rural Hoquiam.
His early years were spent helping around the farm, and swimming and fishing in the Humptulips River with brothers, Ev and Roger. He loved to reminisce about his days at Newton School and all of his friends in and around Copalis Crossing. Don attended Hoquiam High School and was a proud graduate of the class of 1963.
He began working at Three Way Service as a teenager and continued working well into his 20s. No one was a stranger to Don and his fun-loving personality.
In April of 1971 he was introduced to his future wife Linda on a blind date. They married 7 months later on Nov. 20, 1971, in Aberdeen, Washington.
Don worked briefly with his brother Ev Holcomb at Holcomb’s Marine and then worked at Lamb Grays Harbor before entering his career at Grays Harbor Transit. He retired in 2010.
Don thoroughly enjoyed camping, picnics, fishing, clam digging and spending time with his family travelling around the Olympic Peninsula which was “home” for all of his life. One of his favorite meals was fresh razor clams and he was always thrilled that his nephew Tim kept him supplied. He was loyal to the Seattle Mariners, Seattle Seahawks and The UW Huskies.
Don is survived by his wife Linda of Hoquiam, a son Matt (Ginger) of Montesano, a daughter Sara (Jason) of Portland, Oregon and a grandson Devan (Alli) of Puyallup who was the son of his daughter Suzanne, who passed in 1999; siblings Everett (Doris) of Toledo and Roger (Marie) of McCleary. Grandchildren include Kyndal, Macy, Asher, Bella and Carter, great-grandchild Braylon and another on the way. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Don should be remembered for his charm and outgoing demeanor. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and always loved to reminisce about the “good old days.”
He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of life is being planned and will be announced later.
