Donald Richard Hurd, age 80, a longtime resident of Hoquiam, died on Aug. 11, 2023, at Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Aberdeen.

Don was born on Nov. 7, 1942, in Meriden, Connecticut to Richard and Simonne Hurd. The family moved to Santa Ana, California when Don was a young boy, and he graduated from Santa Ana High School in 1960. As a young man Don enjoyed family trips to the Redwoods and found his love for the woods and forestry work. He went on to earn his Forestry Degree at Cal Poly Humboldt University in Arcata, California. While attending Humboldt University he met his future wife of 58 years, Linda Meyer Hurd.

Don and Linda were married on May 30, 1964, the same weekend of Don’s college graduation. Upon his college graduation Don was hired to work at the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the Quinault area and the couple moved to Hoquiam where they made their home. Don worked at many forestry companies over the years including the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Aloha Lumber, Evans Products and Mayr Brothers Logging. He also worked as Hoquiam’s City Forester for a few years. He eventually began his self-employed surveying company, Donald R. Hurd Professional Land Surveying, which he ran until his retirement.

Don volunteered as a baseball coach when his kids were growing up and was involved with Hoquiam Rotary. Don volunteered and was a participant in Hoquiam Loggers Playday for many years and had also been a Hoquiam city councilman.

Surviving relatives include their two sons and their spouses, Donny and Lisa Hurd of Aberdeen and Tyler and Kelly Hurd of Aberdeen; five grandchildren: Matthew (Stephany Doll), Jacob, Claire, Kyle and Natalie; and one great-grandchild, Braven; sister Patty Hurd and niece Sara LeCain (Bryan) Burchmore of San Francisco, California; sister Jeanne (Ralph) Smith of Birmingham, Alabama; and nephews Ryan and Scott, also of Alabama.

Linda preceded him in death, passing just eight months prior.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Hoquiam Food Bank or Hoquiam Loggers Playday Dave Rabey Memorial Scholarship, P.O. Box 540, Hoquiam, WA 98550.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam.
