Donald W. Zimmerman, 95, passed away on Sept. 9, 2016. He was born in Lead, S.D. on Oct. 17, 1920 to Herb and Emma Zimmerman. The family moved to Hoquiam in 1922.
A graduate of Hoquiam High School, he married Margaret Finch on Dec. 6, 1941, the day before the Pearl Harbor attack. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps throughout WWII while stationed in Bangor, Kansas City and Denver.
He worked as a salesman for Zellerbach Paper Company and later owned Dart’s Stationery in downtown Hoquiam. He was a life-long member of the Hoquiam Elks. A Grays Harbor resident most of his life, he lived in Hoquiam for 75 years and Ocean Shores for 18.
He was preceded in death by Margaret, his wife of 65 years, daughter Barbara, and his brother Everett. He is survived by a son, Bill (Maureen) Zimmerman, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was known as a lucky man, having survived a fall from a Douglas C-47 airplane during WWII.
A private urn committal will take place at Hoquiam’s Sunset Memorial Park.
