Doris Irene and Clair Elverton “Skip” Crandall died last month at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Lacey

Doris Irene and Clair Elverton “Skip” Crandall, who were married Oct. 5, 1974, in Montesano, died last month at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Lacey — Skip on June 7, 2021 and Doris on June 21, 2021.

Doris was born on June 10, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa to Kyle Leeman and Gladys Oleafa (Bowers) Hargis. She graduated from Ankeny High School in 1954.

She was a homemaker, but also worked as a bank clerk/teller at the old Rainier Bank in Aberdeen, a teacher’s aide at the old Robert Gray Elementary School on Holmes St. in Aberdeen and as an inserter for The Daily World.

Doris enjoyed going to coffee “klatches” at the Aberdeen McDonald’s with her husband Skip. She enjoyed taking vacations with her family, often traveling to Iowa to visit her family nearly every summer for the Hargis Family Reunion. She loved taking care of her grandchildren and babysitting for others.

Skip was born on June 7, 1936, in Watertown, New York to Ralph Joseph and Irene Margaret (Hughes) Crandall. He was named for his paternal uncle, Elverton Clair Crandall, who died in France during WWI.

Skip was a jet engine mechanic for the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Iceland. After military service, he worked for the Weyerhaeuser sawmill in Cosmopolis as a saw filer until retirement.

Skip was given his nickname by his dad, and he allowed everyone to call him that. He was an avid gardener and would tend to others’ lawns, often with the “help” of his grandsons, Cody Messerer and Jordan Stullick. He enjoyed taking vacations with his family, often driving to Iowa to visit his wife Doris’ family.

When the grandchildren were young, Skip and Doris would take their grandchildren on the same road trips that they used to take their children on.

Doris and Skip are survived by two sons: Joseph M. Cipale (Peggy) of Vancouver and Ralph J. Crandall of Lacey; three daughters: Jacqueline R. “Jackie” Quinby (Bruce) of Hoquiam, Julie D. Cipale of Olympia and Donna L. Palmer (Jim) of Lacey. They are survived by nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Virginia McBroom (Ron) of Winterset, Iowa; cousin Robert “Bob” Bowers of Lacey, numerous nephews and nieces, and close friends John and Lynn Stullick of Aberdeen.

They were predeceased by her parents, his parents, infant grandson Chaz Raymond Palmer as well as her sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis J. and Leroy Vanderflught and brother Kenneth W. Hargis.

There will not be any memorial service.
