Eugene M. ‘Gene’ Kuhn Sr., 76, longtime Grays Harbor resident and former printer/composing room foreman at The Daily World, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, at his home in Aberdeen.

Eugene M. ‘Gene’ Kuhn Sr., 76, longtime Grays Harbor resident and former printer/composing room foreman at The Daily World, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, at his home in Aberdeen.

Gene was born on June 15, 1941, in The Dalles, Ore., to Rudolph and Dorothy (Swan) Kuhn. He grew up in southeast Portland and graduated from Franklin High School in 1959. He joined the U.S. Army in 1959 and was honorably discharged several months later due to family illness.

He went to several trade schools, earning certificates. Gene married Sharon (Ball), after high school, they had three children together; they later divorced. He worked for the Oregonian in Portland, and then went to work for the Hurst Corp. in California. In 1972, he moved to Montesano and went to work at The Daily World as a printer in the composing room and became the composing room foreman and worked there for 40 years, retiring in 2012.

On Sept. 18, 1982, Gene married Carlene E. Howell in Aberdeen. She resides at the family home in Aberdeen.

Gene loved to tinker and was a self-taught mechanic, craftsman, and could fix or build anything. He was a self-taught musician and could play any instrument, especially the guitar, piano, accordian, and harmonica. He loved his dogs, fishing and was an avid hunter when he was younger. He was an expert rifleman. He liked going to sporting events, especially to cheer on his kids. He had a beautiful singing voice, especially Elvis Presley songs, and while in California was in jam sessions with Merle Haggard and Elvis Presley.

Gene is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carlene Kuhn of Aberdeen; sons Evan J. Kuhn of Aberdeen, and Eugene M. Kuhn Jr of Vancouver, Wash.; daughters: Wendy (Carl) Falls of Vancouver, Wash., and Erin Kuhn of Aberdeen, Wash.; three grandchildren: Vanessa Kuhn, Dominique Falls and Carl Falls; a brother Jerry (Lila) Kuhn of Vancouver, Wash.; nieces Joselin, Renee, nephews Chris, Larry, Ronnie. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy Lee Kuhn, his sister Josephine Jackson, nephew Gary Cody, and parents.

A memorial service, potluck and celebration of Gene’s life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. in the United Christian Church in Aberdeen.
