Gary Lee Hanes, 76 years of age, a 16-year resident of Ocean Shores, Washington, died on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2020, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Washington. He was born on May 16, 1943, in Angola, Indiana, to Leland A. and Marcelle (Goodhew) Hanes.
When he was an infant the family lived on River Street in Manistee, Michigan, and he attended the Gethsemane Lutheran School. While he was growing up he played football and baseball. He trapped rattlesnakes and sold them for anti-venom. He worked at Howard Johnson as a bellhop, and he gave this money to the family to help with their basic expenses.
Gary joined the Navy at the age of 17 and was an ordnance man for three years and nine months.
Gary Lee Hanes was married to Edna Kaye Neal on Aug. 2, 1962, in San Jose, California. He had met the love of his life at the Natural Bridges State Park in Santa Cruz, California.
They lived in Milton, Florida, for a year and then worked in a Southern California Safeway Bakery, was a retail clerk and then a correctional officer in Santa Clara, California.
He volunteered as a cook at many of the functions in the areas he resided. He enjoyed fishing, making crafts and taught Karate, having graduated from Kim and Al Tracy Karate School with his third-degree black belt.
Gary attended the Foxworthy Baptist Church for 45 years and for the past 16 years he was a member of the Ocean Shores Baptist Church.
His travels have taken him to Michigan, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Canada and Mexico.
He will long be remembered as being a great husband, father, brother, grandpa and friend to many, a strong man of God, a supporter of the military, one who finished what he started, a hard and loyal worker and a lover of life.
Gary Lee is survived by his wife, Edna K. Hanes of the Ocean Shores family home; his son, Joe Don Hanes and a granddaughter, Sasha Armenta Hanes of Ocean Shores; his daughter and son-in-law, Gina Lynn James and Jeff James of San Jose, California; his grandchildren, Alishia Ann Kalman and her husband, Kenyon Kalman, his great-grandchildren, Lexi Bell Kalman, Hunter Reed Kalman and Dylan Elliot Kalman, his grandchildren, Erick Stephen Alexander and his wife, Jessica Alexander, his daughter and son-in-law, Carol Denice Kinimaka and James P. Kinimaka of Newman, California, his great-grandchildren, Hailey Piilani Kinimaka, Christian John Lee Lelleo Kinimaka; his sisters, Kathi Ritchie and Mary Beth Fleming and other relatives.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, and Monday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Coleman Mortuary, 422 5th St. in Hoquiam, Washington.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at the Ocean Shores Baptist Church, 625 Point Brown Ave. NW in Ocean Shores, Washington.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, March 5, 2020, at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington.
Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary of 422 5th Street in Hoquiam, Washington.
