Hazel L. Cole (Kliemaker) died at Pacific Care & Rehab on Jan. 27, 2017 in Hoquiam, Wash. She was 98, just 2 weeks short of her 99th birthday. Hazel was born on Feb. 11, 1918 in Montesano, Wash. to her parents Antony “Tony” and Mame Kliemaker.
Hazel lived in Grays Harbor her entire life. Much of that time was spent raising seven children. She had an open door policy at her home and was famous in the neighborhood for her maple bars, aka “rubber necks”, being like none other. Many knew Hazel as the no nonsense owner and operator of Hazel’s Grocery Store on NW Blvd. She also ran Hazel’s Trailer Park until just a few years ago.
Hazel loved tending to flowers in her small garden, spending time with family, watching sports, and playing games. She especially loved playing cards and bingo. Her trips to Reno and local Casinos were her favorite pastime. Hazel had a wicked sense of humor, was very generous and rightfully earned the nickname “Hotrod Granny”.
She is survived by her daughter Sherri Fleming; sons Gerald (Rae), Norman, and Kenneth Cole; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Roberta “Bobbie” Bullock (Cole); sons Mitchell and Wayne “Windy” Cole; and Sister Etta Cox.
A Celebration of Hazel’s life will be held on her 99th birthday at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at The Cosmopolis Lions Club. Come share your memories of Hazel and enjoy coffee and desserts.
