Janell Valdeen Wedekind, 86, passed away Oct. 16, 2021, at her home in Montesano, Washington.
Janell was born to Simon Messenger and Marguerite (Callaway) Messenger in Elma, Washington, on Jan. 31, 1935. She graduated from Montesano High School in 1953 and married her high school sweetheart, Ronald. They went on to have three daughters and share 43 years of marriage. Ron preceded Janell in death in 1996.
Janell was the type of person who found joy in all aspects of life. She worked in the Grays Harbor County Treasurer’s office for 30 years. She adored her job and co-workers so much that, upon retiring from the Chief Deputy position, she joked, “I would have paid them to let me work here!”
In retirement, Janell enjoyed travelling all over the U.S. with friends and family, including checking the Grand Canyon off her bucket list. She loved hosting “game nights” for her friends and grandchildren. She was always doing for others. She frequently cooked meals for the Union Gospel Mission and volunteered at Montesano Health & Rehab for eight years.
Janell was a devoted member of the Montesano Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon and a ruling elder. Her faith in God was unwavering, and it brings her family great comfort to know she has been called home.
Janell is survived by her sister, Diane Valentine of Othello, Washington; three daughters and their spouses, Susan and Mike Filyaw, Teresa and Greg Geer; and Carol and George Powers; five grandchildren; and six (soon to be seven) great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister Normalee Holmeide.
Donations in Janell’s honor may be made to a charity of your choice. There will be a graveside service at Wynoochee Cemetery with immediate family.
