Jean Marie Carlson, 92, Seattle resident, died Thursday, July 7, 2022, in Seattle, Washington. Jean was born on Oct. 31, 1929, in Moose Lake, Minnesota to Joseph and Dorothy (Hill) Stanton. She lived in Moose Lake until she was in high school, and her family moved to Hoquiam, Washington, where she graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1947.
She met Dale Carlson at a youth group at Saron Lutheran Church in Hoquiam and later she married Dale on Nov. 11, 1948, in Vancouver, Washington. They were married for over 70 years when the Lord took him home first on Feb. 16, 2019, in Seattle. Jean moved to Aberdeen following her marriage to Dale where they had three children and then moved to Seattle followed by a move to Madison, Wisconsin where Dale got his Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin in 1960. They returned to Seattle for Dr. Carlson’s job at UW, had their fourth child, and became active members of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Jean worked for many years at University Prep School as a bookkeeper until she retired to help care for grandchildren. After Dale’s passing, Jean moved to The Firs in Olympia, being equal distance from all her many relatives.
There are so many things to cherish about Jean — she had a great sense of humor; she loved family; loved to entertain; and loved her kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, nieces, nephews, and kids in general.
She rose out of poverty with one sweater to her name to countless hand-pressed white stiff-collared blouses with plenty of suits to match. Queen Jean, as her caregivers at The Firs fondly referred to her, was a great sports fan and a woman who, if she had been born after Title IX, would have lettered in every sport possible. A devout woman of faith she led by example and lived her life with conviction to her Christian values and love of the Lord.
Jean is survived by a son D. Ronald and (Lin) Carlson of Hillsboro, Oregon; three daughters: Gail (David) Manahan of Seattle, Washington; Joan (Scott) Lee of Woodinville, Washington and Gwen (Donovan) Schaeffer of Westport, Washington; a brother Lowell Stanton of Seaside, Oregon; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her twin brother Jesse Stanton.
There was a private graveside service for Jean on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen, Washington. Arrangements were made by Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen,.
Jean’s family would like to express their gratitude for the wonderful care provided to Jean over the past three years, while at The Firs in Olympia. She had the wonderful care of Renee and Marilynn, along with many others on The Firs staff. Special thanks to Sam and Cindy and Alan and Lois for their almost weekly visits while Jean was there. Then when moving back to Seattle for her last 10 months of life she was cared for by the wonderful team at Prime Choice Adult Family Home in Seattle with particular thanks to Victoria and Sophia, who so lovingly cared for Jean in her last hours, and Evergreen Hospice.
Finally, the family would like to thank our kind Lord, who gifted us with the grace, faith, beauty, laughter, unflagging giving and good heartedness of our dear Jean.
Proverbs 31.28. Her children arise and call her blessed … a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise. In Jesus Name, Amen.
