June Marie Carey, age 97, a longtime resident of Hoquiam, died on Oct. 13, 2024, in Olympia, Washington. June was born on June 26, 1927, in Akron, Ohio, to John P. and Rachel E. (Dent) Derks.
June graduated from Springfield Township High School in Akron, Ohio, and graduated summa cum laude with a degree in education from Kent State University, in Kent, Ohio. She later completed her fifth year at Western Washington University. June had been a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Sigma Delta Pi.
She had worked as a substitute teacher and homebound tutor at Howland School, in Warren, Ohio; Altmar Parish School in Altmar, New York; Pearl River Indian School in Philadelphia, Mississippi; and for the Hoquiam and Aberdeen School districts. June had worked with many friends in the Hispanic community in Hoquiam and Aberdeen as a translator and as a member of Legion of Mary visiting home bound and nursing home residents. She had also been a member of the Southern Deanery of which she was past president and the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. Through Our Lady of Good Help Church, she had been a religious education teacher, past member of Our Lady of Good Help Parish Council, past and present member and officer of the Altar Society, St. Mary’s Guild, and St. Anthony’s Guild.
June and Wilbur Carey were married on June 14, 1948, in Kent, Ohio. Wilbur died in 2018.
She is survived by sons, David Carey (Patricia) of Fountain, Colorado; Stephen Carey (Mary) of Montesano; Patrick Carey (Olesya) of Auburn, Washington; daughters, Norma Rabe (Phil) of Anita, Iowa; and Anna Shanks (Richard) of Olympia; a sister, Miriam Bowers of Renton; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband Wilbur, a son, Daniel Carey and a brother, Fred Derks died previously.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024, at Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church, with a rosary preceding the mass at 12:30 p.m.
Interment will be at Hoquiam’s Sunset Memorial Park.
Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.
