Larry Ronald Johannes, age 82, a lifetime resident of Hoquiam, Wash., died on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at his home in Hoquiam. Larry was born on March 9, 1935, at the Hoquiam General Hospital to Lawrence Alvin and Katherine Elizabeth (Alder) Johannes. He graduated from Hoquiam High School, and then attended Grays Harbor College.
On Sept. 4, 1954, he and Joan Lee Hubble were married in Hoquiam. That same year, he began working for Rayonier and remained in the Timber Division for 29 years. He would later work for Washington Forest Products, and the State of Washington at Grays Harbor College as a job placement counselor.
Community involvement was important to Larry. He had been a Logger’s Playday Chairman, a Mason, Shriner and Kiwanis member.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Joan Lee Johannes of the family home in Hoquiam; two daughters, Suzi Zabiaka and her husband Mike of Hoquiam and Julie Becker of Enumclaw; four brothers, Robert Johannes of Rochester, Warner Johannes of Aberdeen, David Johannes of Lacey and John “Mike” Johannes of Central Park; four grandchildren, Anthony Rice of Oakland, Lauren Rice of Enumclaw, Jo Lee and husband Jeff Carter of Ellensburg and Alli Zabiaka of Hoquiam; and one great-grandchild, Cody Birkeland of Enumclaw.
A son, Daniel Johannes, died previously.
A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Polson Museum in Hoquiam.
Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.
