Leona Karen Obi, a longtime Queets, Washington resident, died on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Washington.

Leona Karen Obi, a longtime Queets, Washington resident, died on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Washington. She was born on June 20, 1951, in Queets to Kilbane and Hazel (Sam) Obi.

She was raised in Queets and had attended the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon.

Taking care of her grandmother, Cecelia, was an important part of her up-bringing.

Leona had worked at the fish hatchery where she would clip and tag fish. She was also a commercial fisherwoman.

She attended the local Indian Shaker Churches.

Leona enjoyed painting paddles, making blankets, beadwork and loved going to casinos. One of her most memorable parts of her life when she became a grandmother to her granddaughter, Aaliyah. She enjoyed giving small gifts showing her love to family and friends. These consisted of blankets, candy, flowers and stuffed animals.

Leona Karen Obi is survived by her son, Thomas Obi of Queets; her granddaughter, Aaliyah Kahlyce Obi of Queets; her sisters, Sharon Pullen of LaPush, Eva Sykes of Hoquiam, Rita Seller of Queets, Theresa Butler of Aberdeen and Laverne Kowoosh of Queets; her companion/spouse Bruce Edward Buter of Queets and other relatives.

Leona lost her battle to breast cancer that she had been fighting for over a year. She was able to enjoy the last bit of her life with amazing memories with her family. She will be missed and loved but forever in our hearts.

Inurnment will be held later at the Queets Cemetery.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 5th Street in Hoquiam, Washington.
