Luella “Happy” Engvall was born to Floyd and Luella (Sloper) Mauch at Ocean Park, Washington on May 8, 1929. She passed quietly Oct. 28, 2022, at Harbor Regional Health Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was 93.
She attended Bay Center Grade School and graduated from South Bend High School in 1946. She liked to tell about working after school hours to help in the WWII war effort.
Happy married Kenneth Ashby late July of 1949. They raised four children: twins David and Dan, Susan and Steven. Ken was lost in a commercial fishing accident in 1959. Happy then married Brady Engvall in 1961 and in turn raised Korry and Kristi.
Happy is survived by sons Dan Ashby, Steven (Roxy) Ashby and Korry Engvall and daughter Kristi (Mark) Ballo, most residing in Ocosta. She is preceded in death by sister Lucille (Mauch) Pederson, brothers: Freddy, Andy Alfred and William; and children Susan (Ashby) Walker and David Ashby Sr. In her beloved family there are 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
After high school graduation Happy moved to Westport with her best friend June Rose Calhoun to work at Harry Harm’s country store. Over the years, she worked at local canneries as well as the family businesses, the last being Brady’s Oysters in Bay City, founded in 1970. In addition to managing businesses she found time to develop craft interests the last being quilting. She quilted until her last days. Through her artistic talent and passion she provided warmth for the many family members. She enjoyed reminiscing and quilting with her good friends. If one knew Happy, they would know her maxim: “Vacant spaces required filling and every unused minute is wasted.”
Happy’s life will be celebrated at a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to the Ocosta Rec Hall.
