Mark Daniel McFeely was born on Aug. 7, 1954, in Hoquiam, Washington, to Bonnie and Jerry McFeely. Mark spent his early years playing in the streets with his friends, and later his two younger sisters, Kerry and Stacy, in the neighborhood “Eastside Gang.” He passed away Feb. 21. 2025.
Mark had a particular love for dogs from an early age. He would be blessed with many 4-legged bonds that he dearly treasured throughout his life. Mark enjoyed playing Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, coached by his dad and representing the Firemen’s Team. In high school, he played baseball and basketball. He graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1972.
Following his graduation, he bought a share in Hoquiam Plywood Company where he began a career that would span more than 50 years. He started out working in the mill and later became the Superintendent. His experience in all aspects of Hoquiam Plywood’s business gave him the ability to effectively lead a productive company through hard economic times up until his passing.
In 1980, he became a father when he welcomed his first child, Ryan. In 1984, he was gifted with the arrival of his daughter, Shandi, on his 30th birthday. He enjoyed his children’s early years with lots of time spent at family dinners and gatherings at his mom and dad’s house. Christmas Eves were well known for being full of joy, laughter, and many jokes at his family members’ expense. Mark could always be counted on to provide sarcasm and quick wit to any situation.
In 2004, he married his wife Michelle (Poole), and welcomed another daughter, Dani, into his heart. He spent 20 years loving and caring for Michelle, who was by his side with love and devotion up until the end. They enjoyed spending time with each other and their many animals and sharing their love of church and Bible study.
His kids blessed him by choosing loving partners to join the family (Jace Sorter, Mike Fonnegra and Daniel Nelson). Mark was an extraordinary grandpa who enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren Marki, Shayla, Addison, and Greyson who lovingly referred to him as “papa.” When papa babysat, rules didn’t apply! In the last few years, he spent a lot of time with his mom. They enjoyed sitting on his dad’s bench at the bay taking in the scenery and reflecting on their blessings in life.
Recently, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of being a radio DJ when he started working at KXPB radio. Music was a passion throughout his life, and it made him so happy to take on a new hobby.
He is survived by an extended family who loved him deeply and will miss him even more deeply — Bonnie (mom), Michelle (wife), Kerry and Stacy (sisters), Ryan, Shandi, and Dani (children), Kevin (nephew), Kacy (niece), and Marki, Shayla, Addison, and Greyson (grandchildren), and his beloved dog, Lady.
A celebration of life will held at 11 a.m. on Saturday. April 12, 2025, at the Hoquiam Elks Lodge.
