On Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, Richard (Dick) Raby returned to Heaven while at home surrounded by his two sons and two dogs.
Richard was born on Feb. 20, 1945, to Henry (Howard) and Bernice (Barney) Raby in Aberdeen, Wash. He grew up in Grayland, graduated from Ocosta High School (Class of 1965) and spent countless weekends at Lake Quinault, where he met Kathy McElwee. Richard and Kathy were married for 47 years. Shortly after marrying, the couple moved to Alaska while Richard served in the Army. They welcomed their first son Mike while living in Alaska. A few years later they moved back to Washington and welcomed their second son Brian. They lived in Vancouver, Wash. for over 20 years while Richard worked for the Port of Portland Police Department. He was the first K-9 police officer for the Port of Portland with his dog Kuda. After retiring, Richard and Kathy moved back to Grays Harbor and settled in Ocean Shores. In Ocean Shores, Richard enjoyed driving tour buses and school buses for a couple of years before he fully retired. He and Kathy enjoyed touring the west in their RV. To pass the time Richard also enjoyed photography, long scenic drives, striking up conversation with any person he met, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by Kathy in 2013. He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Mike (Kelly) of Vancouver, Wash. and Brian (Holly) of Battle Ground, Wash.; seven grandchildren Jordan, Brandon, Justin, Austin, Heidi, Isaiah, and Bethany.
