Robert “Bob” CarlsonDec. 21, 1939 – July 29, 2020

Bob was born in the Midwest in the winter of 1940.

Bob was born in the Midwest in the winter of 1940. As a teen, he moved to California with his family and later worked for the Ford Motor Company with his Dad.

Fate brought Bob to the Harbor, where he found work at the Western Shake Company. After the mill closed down he remained on as a night watchman from 1974-1984, while also working for Jay’s Industrial Cut Stock and then Swanson’s Grocery, where he eventually retired.

From 1985-2020, Bob moved into the old Log Patrol building behind the Door Plant on the 5th Street Extension in Hoquiam, Washington as a long term devoted caretaker for Mr. Anthony “Tony” Cemelich. A sign on the garage door proclaimed it “Bob’s Boat House”. Those who knew him knew how much he adored that property, even keeping up with the mowing a few days before he lost his short battle with pancreatic cancer. You could always count on a hot cup of coffee when visiting Bob at the boat house, and although some may have cringed at the sight and smell, an occasional sardine sandwich.

Bob had a love like no other for all creatures and adopted every cat that ever came his way. He was also fond of the raccoons that would find their way to his doorstop. He called them his guard dogs, because they would scare off unwanted visitors.

He loved to watch the Beverly Hillbillies Thanksgiving episode every year and often remarked that he related more to the Clampett’s than the Drysdales!

Bob was a bright light to all that were lucky enough to know him, and those who did felt extremely blessed to be a part of his life. We will miss his humor, kindness, generosity, laughter, and most of all, his heart.

Happy trails to you our beloved friend.

Bob was preceded in death by a younger brother, Ron.

A special thank you goes out to Deanna Jackson and Scott Chatt for contributing their memories of Bob.
