Rose Marie (Marie) or “Marie” as she preferred to be called, was born July 30, 1946 in Aberdeen, Washington to Barbara (Hubbard) and Sibbie Rovella.

Marie’s parents divorced when she was a toddler, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather Ralph Johansen, living in Montesano. Marie graduated with the Montesano High School Class of 1964.

Shortly after graduation Marie boarded a bus , going to Southern California’s San Fernando Valley, to join her father, stepmother and little sister. While there she enjoyed the many aspects of So. California and during that time she was in her element working at a new department store in Panorama City, Ohrbachs, in ladies department. Every once in while she would bring home something new she could not resist.

A year later Marie returned to Montesano, marrying Leagon Daniel (Dan) Hampton Jr. on May 27, 1966. Marie became stepmother to Trudy and Kathy. Shortly thereafter, as newlyweds they moved to Coffman Cove, Alaska where their daughter Kim Kristine was born. 1969, they returned to Montesano having their son Todd Robert, returning again to Coffman Cove in 1975. As a family, they enjoyed vacation in Maui during the Winter Breaks.

Marie was an extraordinary artist. Creating ceramics, selling her creations throughout the states. Her creating was endless, she was particularly known for her Alaska Clay Creations related to Alaska. These creations are remembered well by those who lived in Coffman Cove, and family living in the lower 48. In the last few years of her Alaska residency, she had a business selling her crafts, Alaska Jewelry and ceramics.

Marie not only created ceramics, but was also known for her sewing, needle point abilities, and cake creations, donating a lot of her talent and time to programs throughout her residency in Coffman Cove.

Upon moving from Alaska she spent several years residing in Lake Chelan. While residing in Lake Chelan, Marie became engaged to Jerry Horner, though they never married, she happily inherited and help raise his two sons Jay and Michael. In the late 1990s, Marie relocated to Des Moines, Washington , where, until retirement put her accounting skills to work, following in her mother’s footsteps of banking and accounting After retirement she moved to Petersburg, Alaska to be close to her son Todd.

Marie enjoyed traveling ,being surrounded by family and friends. She was very generous, having a giving big heart to all those who knew her well.

She is survived by daughter, Kim (Michael ) Downey, of Madison, Mississippi; son, Todd (Rov) Hampton of Golden Valley, Arizona; stepdaughters Trudy Hampton Johnson and Kathy Linke of Aberdeen, three grandchildren, Bailey Downey of Niles, Ohio; Ryley Downey of Niceville, Florida and Daniel Hampton of Golden Valley, Arizona, two great-grandchildren, sister Valerie Rovella Willis of Montesano, Washington and brother Robert “Bobby” Johansen of Madison, Mississippi.

She was preceded in death by her mother Barbara Afton Johansen, fathers Sibbie Rovella and Ralph Johansen and brother Richard “Dick” Johansen.

May Marie rest in peace and love. A celebration of life will be held in Montesano sometime in 2025.
