Sonja Cowan passed peacefully in her Westport home on Aug. 18, 2024, where she and husband John have lived for more than 36 years.
Sonja was a lifelong member of the South Beach community. She served as the Eastern Star worthy matron, worked many years and retired from Bank of America, she was a school board member while her boys were in school and was an avid bowler. She and John loved to travel , participate in local events and volunteer. Sonja participated in fundraising for the Westport Maritime Museum. She played piano and organ both at home and church. She will be missed by all but mostly by family.
Sonja is survived by John Cowan (husband), his children Julie and (husband) Pete VanLierop, John R Cowan, Sonja’s children Tom and (wife) Pan Persson, Kevin and (wife) Felicia Persson, grandchildren; Jared and Peter Keplinger, Nocole and Courtney Persson and Noah VanLierop, her nieces Dana Persson-Zora, Heidi Persson, Kerry Jones and nephew Rick Jones.
Sonja was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Edith Saling and sister Barbara.
We will celebrate her life at the Ocosta Rec Hall on Sunday Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. All are welcome.
