William McKinley Medley of Westlake Village, Calif., passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on June 9, 2017, in the company of his loving family and under the compassionate care of Vitas hospice.
A native of Cosmopolis, Wash., William joined the Air Force after high school and was stationed in the South Pacific and Korea.
Whenever on leave, the ships that brought him back to our shores invariably passed through the Golden Gate. Docking at Naval Air Station Alameda, the lights of a burgeoning San Francisco skyline lay just minutes across the Bay. There, at a dance attended by military personal, William met his future wife of 52 years, Joan. She’d watch his ship take William back to duty many times before the couple married in Sausalito, Calif.
Their life’s journey took them to various points in California, where William’s tireless work ethic lead to a long career in banking – most notably as a Trust Officer, sometimes serving famous clients. He characteristically downplayed such connections, always mindful of the modest beginnings he came from.
William is survived by his wife Joan, sons Bill and Timothy, daughter Suzanne, son-in-law Scott, daughters-in-law Nancy and Beth, and grandchildren Jacob and Meghan. He was preceded in death by brothers Kelman, Gilbert and by sisters Patricia, Lanie and Maryanne. He was an active member of Rotary Club of Westlake Village and in recent years was an ombudsman overseeing conditions at nursing facilities.
William’s family also wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff who cared for him at Los Robles Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 16, 2017, at Saint Jude’s Catholic Church in Westlake Village, Calif.
