1A Evergreen Track Championships: Montesano sweeps team titles

Bulldogs boys win 11 of 17 events, girls win 10 of 18 to claim team league championships

Montesano swept the team titles as the Bulldogs boys and girls track teams emerged victorious at the 1A Evergreen League Championships on Thursday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

“I think it was our best overall team performances,” Montesano head coach Doug Schupbach said. “We won and/or placed high in almost every event for both the boys and girls.”

The Bulldogs boys team won 11 of 17 events for a total of 138 points to win the team league title, far outpacing the rest of the field. Hoquiam placed second with 50 points, followed by Elma (27 points) and Tenino (12 pts.).

Montesano got multiple event wins from Aydan Darst (long jump, triple jump) and personal-record victories from Aric Jacklin (3200), Kenny Koonrad (discus) and Soren Cobb (high jump).

Hoquiam’s Timmy Higgins (800 meters, 1600) joined Darst as the only multi-event winners in the boys competition.

Grizzlies sprinter Giovanni Foster defeated Elma’s Tucker Simpkins to win the boys 100 meter dash with Simpkins returning the favor in the 200, edging Foster by five-hundredths of a second.

While the girls team competition was closer than the boys, Montesano won by a comfortable margin. Led by multiple event wins from Madolyn Olson, Jaiden King and Ashlyn Devereaux, the Bulldogs tallied 126 points to defeated second-place Hoquiam by 25 points.

Elma (27 pts.) placed third with Tenino (12 pts.) coming in fourth.

Olson won both the girls 100 and 400 meter races with King sweeping the girls 100 and 300 meter hurdles. Devereaux took the top spot in both the girls javelin and long jump, with a PR mark of 15 feet, one inch to win the latter.

Monte also got a personal-best win from Alayna Olson (triple jump).

Hoquiam was led by Valerie Roloff (800, 1600) and Tyara Straka (shot put, discus), each of whom won two events on Thursday, with Roloff running a PR time of 6:08.76 in the 1,600.

Schupbach said he was pleased to be sending “a very large and talented group” to next week’s 1A District 4 Championships at Seton Catholic High School in Vancouver.

“Extremely proud of our athletes and their performances and efforts today,” he said. “We had some great times and distances with some we expected and some that surprised us.”
